Detroit Iron & Metal Co is always looking for ferrous and non-ferrous metals to recycle. We are conveniently located at the corner of Dix Avenue and Lonyo Street. Contact us today!

What is required for me to sell scrap metal to Detroit Iron and Metal?

All customers must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid state or federally issued picture I.D. You are also required by state law to provide a thumbprint and to sign a declaration stating that you haven’t been convicted of a scrap theft related crime and are fully authorized to sell your material to us.

What form of payment can I expect for my scrap?

We pay cash through an automated teller dispenser, check, or voucher. Public Act 99 of 2014 requires scrap metal facilities in the State of Michigan to adhere to certain payment restrictions concerning specific materials including but not limited to: Copper Wire, Copper Piping, Air Conditioning Components, Catalytic Converters. For these items, if a total of $25 or more is sold in a single day, the payment must be mailed to the address on your valid ID. If you are registered as a commercial/industrial customer, you will be exempt, from this requirement. Please visit our commercial/industrial tab on this website for more information.

I need pick-up service. Do you offer this?

Yes, we have roll-off container services available for large commercial accounts. We do not however, provide residential pick-up.

Is assistance provided if I need help unloading material at the yard?

We have cranes, hi-lo’s and loaders to help with heavy material. We also have an experienced and friendly staff available to help unload and identify your material.

Can I sell any items that have Freon in them?

All appliances that contain sealed unit compressors must either have them intact, or if removed, must be tagged from a licensed freon recovery facility. Detroit Iron & Metal is a licensed recovery site and we do recover the Freon from appliances that we purchase. If the copper lines are cut and/or the compressor is removed, we are not able to purchase the appliance.

Do you offer certified weight tickets for vehicles and trailers?

Yes, we can provide certified weight tickets. There is a $7 fee for this service unless you are a registered customer or are doing a move for the armed forces.

What is the best way to alert scrapyards if there has been a theft to my metal property?

First, you must file a police report and get a case number. Then, if you visit the website www.scraptheftalert.com you will be prompted to fill out a form. This website is the industry recognized database that most quickly informs scrapyards across the region about reported material theft.

Do you require a junk license to sell scrap?

Although we don’t require a scrapping or junk license to sell scrap, the City of Detroit has recently been targeting people transporting scrap materials. City code does state that a junk license is required in order to scrap in Detroit. Most of the public is recycling private property and should not be subject to the license requirement. But, if you scrap often and drive around looking for material, it can save you a lot of time, money and aggravation if you obtain a license.

Please see attached form for City of Detroit junk license procedure.

    Do you purchase catalytic converters?

When buying catalytic converters from the public, we require either a copy of the title or registration from the vehicle it came off of, and the person listed on the paperwork must be the seller, unless explicit authorization is given to have someone sell on their behalf.
